Bassist  |  Deep Purple

"When I played bass through GTR, I was honestly knocked out with the result. It gave me exactly what I was looking for. That's when I knew I wanted one."

“I can't imagine what life was like before discovering GTR3. It sounds so organic and clear. The bass amps are particularly great, but whatever you put through it—guitars, vocals, drums, anything you can imagine—it always gives satisfaction. GTR is a superb addition to any computer.”

Roger Glover is destined to go down in musical history for having played bass on one of the most recognizable riffs in rock: “Smoke on the Water,” from Deep Purple’s 1972 classic Machine Head.

A native of South Wales, Glover got his first real taste of music from the local bands that performed at his family's pub. By the age of 13, he began playing guitar and a few years later formed his first band, the Madisons. Toward the end of 1963, the Madisons had morphed into Episode Six and, in 1965, future Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan had joined the lineup. After graduating from the pop sound that characterized their early efforts, the group experimented with psychedelia and progressive rock. Episode Six went their separate ways in 1969, while Glover and Gillan went on to join Deep Purple.

In 1972, Glover’s fourth Deep Purple album, Machine Head, reached the U.S. Top Ten on the strength of "Smoke on the Water." After enjoying what was perhaps the pinnacle of Deep Purple’s success, Glover left the band following their 1973 summer tour of Japan. He then began producing various high profile acts, including such hard rock icons as Judas Priest, Nazareth, Status Quo, and Whitesnake. In 1978, Glover reunited with former Deep Purple band mate guitarist Ritchie Blackmore in Rainbow, for whom he co-wrote and co-produced several albums.

Over the years, Glover put out several solo albums, and, since 1983, has continued to tour and record with the current incarnation of Deep Purple.
