“What a powerful tool!”

“For me, GTR is much more than just a guitar and bass tool. I actually use re-amping with GTR as an “extreme parallel compression” device, creating energy and grit for drums, vocals…. Everything sometimes! Often the Stomp plug-ins can be recycled on other instruments as well, the Vibrolo and LayD being among my favorites for adding intensity or space, particularly the sync functions on the delay-based Stomps. It’s always fun exposing new players to the models of my very own amps, when they’re able to compare the “real thing” with the “modeled thing” and can’t tell the difference…sometimes they like the “modeled thing” even more!”

In 1979, Peter opened Acme Recording with a group of friends and has continued recording relentlessly into the present. As engineer and/or mixer, Peter has worked on tracks for a veritable Who’s Who of contemporary music: Queen, Mick Ronson & David Bowie, Freedy Johnston, Ian Hunter, Chrissie Hynde, John Mellencamp. Joan Osborne, Huey Lewis & The News, Steve Cropper, Anita Baker & Cyrus Chestnut, Vernon Reid, Delbert McClinton, David Sanborn, Jim Carroll, Robert Cray, Corey Glover, Iggy Pop, Ron Wood, Todd Rundgren, Cyndi Lauper, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and Jimmy Cliff, and the list goes on and on.

His credits as both producer and engineer include:
  • The first four Spin Doctors records (totaling 8 million plus sales) and additional Spin Doctors projects for the “Philadelphia” and “Space Jam” soundtracks.
  • Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover’s recent solo effort as well as remixes for Deep Purple’s classic “Machine Head” and “Who Do We Think We Are” albums.
  • Recordings by Martin Sexton, Evan and Jaron, and Freedy Johnston, co-produced with Danny Kortchmar.
At Acme Recording, Peter's studio, Waves bundles have been in use for nearly ten years now. In Peter’s words: "We were early adopters of the DAW. I initially began mixing into the box to ‘stems.’ It was at that point that I discovered the Waves RenEQ and processing and what a huge difference it made to my final mix.”

Recently, master guitar maker Paul Reed Smith got Peter involved with the development of Waves GTR, and Acme became early adopters of this product as well. As Peter says, “Now we can use amp modeling as a real production tool. These sounds are for keeps. It's fun seeing other people discover this each time we use GTR on a session.”

For GTR3, Waves modeled several of Peter's treasured vintage amps, as well as several of Acme's best speaker cabinets. “Now, I can take one of Paul’s hi-gain amps and run it through one of my tiny 8" speakers, something that actually wouldn't be possible to do with the actual devices. Pretty cool!”
