“GTR3 has been instrumental in getting the Warped Tour mixes where they need to be. It’s impressive to see that my favorite presets happen to correspond to my favorite amps I use in the studio.”
Since his early days cutting his teeth at the Power Station NE in Connecticut (an exact replica of the original NY Power Station’s A Room), New York City-based producer/engineer Jon D’Uva has struck a balance between live and studio work that’s helped shape his methodology. “You only get one shot to get it right on a live show, so every little detail is critical. I take the same approach in the studio.”
After moving from New England to Brooklyn in 2001, D’Uva quickly proved he could handle the pressure of mobile recording and broadcasting, which led to live work with Radiohead, The Strokes, Ben Folds, Travis, Jack Johnson, and Rob Thomas, to name just a few. In the studio, he met the industry’s shift from analog to digital with open arms, while treating tracking, editing, and mixing as a trinity of peers, each worthy of equal attention and dedication.
And his approach is paying off. Back at the Power Station (still one of his favorites rooms), Jon recently tracked the latest Roomful of Blues album “Raisin’ A Ruckus,” for Alligator Records. Also, fresh off the heels of recording and mixing Underoath’s first Live DVD “777,” he’s currently working on the stereo and 5.1 mixes for the official Warped Tour 2007 DVD which includes industry heavyweights Sum 41, Bad Religion, Fishbone, Coheed and Cambria, The Starting Line, Pepper, Killswitch Engage, Chiodos, Circa Survive, and Pennywise.
If there’s one thing these bands have in common, it’s the need for killer guitar tones. "I always try to capture the instruments as naturally as possible, but sometimes things are beyond one’s control on a large festival recording. GTR and its Stomps have really allowed me to shape the tones in the mix, without losing the character of the original guitar and bass rigs.”
